Tetris Didn't Win at The Game Awards — A New Category Might Solve This

As any prominent honors show draws close, there’s always a demand for the addition fresh award types to honor overlooked contributions and satisfy the spirits of followers who have specialized interests.

Another commentator has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. The same goes for strategy board titles, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. But they will have to forgive me if I try to elbow in front because like all single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification supporting my request stands as crucial and significant. The demand is this: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and it will always start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that film award organizations avoid this approach. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety they barely qualify one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of interactive entertainment excellence to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.

Current Gaming Award Categories

Leading game ceremonies presently include award types recognizing Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Fighting, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere for their placement. Consider three of recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition in a different title, engaging interpersonal challenges of a third title. Which classification works within current classifications? Nowhere, that’s where.

Acknowledgment Issues

Numerous examples exist of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, VR/AR Game, or the intensely contested Indie races.

  • One classic puzzle game got overlooked in any category in 2014
  • Another creative title missed out in 2019
  • Popular arranging title was overlooked in 2021
  • Limited numbers of logic titles managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications

Importance of Logic Titles

Frequently they represent modest productions, however the design behind logic titles holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences in the world and have been for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks within interactive entertainment, while interacting with diverse game types.

Recommendation and Reasoning

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select a field of five engaging, different, qualified experiences each ceremony simply — or rather, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave so many good games out.

And to reiterate, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of gaming itself. Just like movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait 35 years.
