Elite Athletes Call on Iranian Authorities to Halt Death Sentence of Boxing Champion

Over two dozen Olympic medallists, mentors and additional global sports figures have put their names to a appeal demanding a halt to the execution of a boxing titleholder and instructor, who is facing execution in Iran.

Increasing Worldwide Condemnation

Amid rising global condemnation over Iran’s escalating use of capital punishment as a tool of suppression, the forcefully phrased statement denounces the government's ruling to uphold the capital punishment of Mohammad Javad Vafaei Sani.

Vafaei Sani, three decades old, from the city in the northern province, was taken into custody for participating in countrywide demonstrations in two thousand nineteen and accused of supporting an resistance movement. He has passed half a decade in incarceration, where he has been abused and kept in isolation.

Death Penalty Surge

According to findings, there is an “death penalty surge in the country, which has reached shocking levels”. In the year 2023, authorities put to death at least eight hundred fifty-three people – a forty-eight percent rise on the previous year. Last year, records showed nine hundred seventy-two executions, constituting the peak figure since the year 2015. Over eight hundred people have been sentenced so far in 2025.
