RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The location, located using intelligence, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts leading to the facility... initial indications are that the strike was effective," the ministry announced.
There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned safely, the MoD added.
The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.
IS - referred to as ISIS - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.
"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and determination to work closely with our partners, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
UK warplanes have carried out patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of the group following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I must thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary commented. "They were part of thousands of UK service members stationed over the holidays. This mission, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, highlights how UK forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, protecting the UK at home and influential overseas."
In December, the US military executed what it called a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an assault claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 combatants in Syria and Iraq.
